In this entry, i would like technology is being increasingly harnessed to overcome blindness. So far, much of the key progress has been restricted to restoring sight for those with a specific type of visual impairment – in particular retinitis pigmentosa – an inherited condition that involves the loss of cells in the retina and causes a decline in vision.

Bionic implanted eyeballs, “Star Trek”­style visors, telescopic contact lenses ... these are just a few of the many exciting projects underway to both restore and provide enhanced sight.

Significant strides have been made in tech that will restore and transform lives ­ replacing white canes, service animals, braille machines and more for the visually impaired.


The world’s first bionic eyes have now been attached to the retinas of dozens of blind or nearly blind people, and we are just beginning to get a sense of what those patients see. People with these implants will have the ability to distinguish light from dark, and they can recognize the outlines of objects in their view.

According to the Orcutt (2015) had stated “the arti´Čücially created vision is also distorted in certain characteristic ways, says Geourey Boynton, a professor of psychology at the University of Washington. New computersimulated images, based on reports from people with retinal implants as well as fairly well established knowledge of how cells in the retina respond to electrical signals, can help illustrate these distortions, says Bonyton, who conducted the research along with a fellow University of Washington psychology professor, Ione Fine”. A camera capture the image send by the stimulator and the device will converts them into electrical pulse patterns, which are then delivered to the retina via an implanted electrode array.

Emotion Mouse (For hand)

Emotion mouse is the simplest way to enables the machines to identify these minor emotional variations of human beings even by a single touch on the mouse. Jasmine et al (2016) stated, “Another non-invasive way to obtain information about a person is through touch. People use their computers to Obtain, store and manipulate data using their computer. In order to start creating smart computers, the computer must start gaining information about the user”. Moreover, people will spend approximately 1/3 of their total computer time touching the input device and the machines started to react with the users according to this Emotion Mouse. It is design to evaluate and identify the user’s emotions such as fear, surprise, anger, sadness and happiness when he or she is interacting with a computer.


Bionic eye can give a millions of people a chance of seeing again. The experiment on implementing bionic eye to the blind patient was successful. Based on the research, it stated that the patient who undergoes the operation had suffered blindness for eight years ago due to the rare disease called Vogt-Koyanagi (VKH) syndrome. Walton (2016) defined this Vogt-Koyanagi (VKH) syndrome as “a multisystematic disorder characterized by granulomataous panuveities with exudative retinal detachments that is often associated with neurologic and cutaneous manifestations”. This rare disease is attacking the pigments in the eyes. Within a year suffered in the disease she started to lose her sight and she was completely blind. According to Spencer (2016), a medical correspondent for the Daily Mail stated that “…surgeons have implanted a visual stimulator chip in the brain of a 30-year-old-woman. The patient, who has totally blind for seven years, saw colored flashes, lines and spots when signals were sent to her brain from a computer.

Dr. Nader Pouration who performed the surgery is planning to send footage from a tiny video camera to the brain, which could provide the world’s first bionic eye and restore sight to a millions. Spencer also stated, “During six weeks of testing, the patient has consistently seen the exact signals the scientists sent to her visual cortex, the section of the brain which usually receives images from the optic nerve”. Dr Pouratian inserted the stimulator which is an array of tiny electrodes into the back of her brain in August. Within the four-hour procedure, surgeons will cut a small hole in the back of her skull and laid the stimulator on the surface of her brain. A small antenna receiver was implanted into the gap in her skull, which receives signals sent from a computer. The doctors then will wait for a permission from US regulator to connect the system called ‘Orion I’  to a camera worn in a pair of glasses, which they hope will send moving images directly to the brain.

Scientists are on the brink of restoring sight to the blind by sending moving images directly to the brain. This technology has the potential to restore sight for the millions of people who have lost their sight or becoming blinded by cancer. Thus, it is proven that this implemented of bionic eye to the human is actually works wonder because this system has the potential to restore sight to the blind.

Scientists are on the brink of restoring sight to the blind by sending moving images directly to the brain. Thus, Mark Humayun has developed Argus II, commonly known as the bionic eye. According to Niaz (2016) “Mark’s invention is a miracle for people suffering from inherited retinal degenerative disease that leads to blindness in old age”. It has been used to treat patients who are suffering a disease characterized by degeneration of photoreceptors where the cello in the retina is sensitive to light. In addition, his aim on developing this bionic eye is to destroy the blindness by helping millions worldwide with the gift of sight.

Today I would like to talk about a recent news on eye tracking software. There was a recent news title “Vicar jailed after dying abuse victim gives evidence through eye-tracking software”. This news had reported on The Independent paper in United Kingdom. According to Agerholm (2017), the person has died before he could be informed of the jury’s conclusion. 

The picture above is a person named Cyril Rowe who was convicted of three counts of indecent assault after his victim was still able to give evidence despite his paralysis.

According to the Agerholm, Cyrill was died before he could be informed of the jury’s conclusion, although he had achieved his dying wish of giving evidence against Rowe, the Crown Prosecution service said in a statement. This eye tracking technology is helping him to describe on how a retired vicar abused a choirboy more than 35 years ago and has been jailed for four years. This modern eye tracking technology are using giving an evidence on how Rowe would lock the church door, pin him down and sexually abuse him, before apologizing and giving him £1 in just translating his blinks into wards.

Recently we were asked by a TV production company to discuss an opportunity about eye tracking a footballer, I was pretty shocked when the opportunity turned out to be eye tracking the world’s most expensive footballer in Madrid – Cristiano Ronaldo. 

TV show called “Tested To The Limit” commissioned by one of his sponsors, Castrol, Ronaldo went through a number of tests to find out just why he is so good, and better than other players on the pitch! He undertook sprint challenges, took free kicks, demonstrated his jumping capabilities and of course we eye tracked him as well! The eye tracking part of the day took place when Andy Ansah (of Tekkers fame) and Ronaldo went head on the pitch and we eye tracked both of them as Ronaldo showed off his moves. By saying that it is proven that this eye tracking technology has been implied to the world.

Eye-tracking technology is referring to the measurement of eye activity. Imotions (2016) stated, “Eye tracking implies the recording of eye position (point of gaze) and movement on a 2D screen or in 3D environments based on the optical tracking of corneal reflections to assess visual attention”. For instance, when our eyes are moving on where do we look, what do we ignore and when do we blink. This means that the eye tracker will collect the data by knowing on how the pupil is reacting to the different stimuli. This eye tracking data is collected using either a remote or head-mounted eye tracker that connected to a computer.


I would like to say that the future application of blue eye technology is limitless. This is to ensure a convenient way of simplifying life by providing more interactive and user-friendly facilities in computing device. For instance, based on Tristram (2001) “Most of us hardly notice the surveillance cameras watching over the grocery store or the bank. But lately those lenses have been looking for far more than shoplifters”. This blue eyes software perhaps will make sense of what the cameras see including how many shoppers ignored a promotion, how many stopped at the shop and how many of them reached for the item and put it in their shopping carts. Thus, in the future ordinary household device such as television, refrigerators and microwave may be able to do their jobs to when we just look and speak to them too.

There are two types of magic pointing techniques, which are:

This means that, the cursor is likely to appear in motion towards the target, regardless of how the user actually actuated the manual input device.

Expression Glass is one of the alternative for machine vision face or eye recognition methods. Mepit.com (2014) stated, “By analyzing pattern recognition methods and facial muscle variations, the glass senses and identifies the expressions such as interest or confusion of the user”. Therefore, this wearable device allows any viewer to visualize the confusion and interest level of the wearer. This expression glass will detect the sense of facial muscle movements by using pattern recognition. 

       MAGIC Pointing

According to Rajasekaran (2001) stated, “MAGIC pointing is known as manual and gaze input cascaded (MAGIC) pointing is aiming at placing the mouse where the user gazes at”. Magic pointing will reduce the cursor movement needed for target selection. This will lead to the reduction of manual stress and fatigue. The user does not have to be aware of the role of the eye gaze because they just have to click on the target with a regular manual input device. 


As in the previous entry, we got know about Blue eyes technology has the ability to gather information about you and interact through a special technique. Mepits.com (2014) stated, “The computer can talk, listen or screech aloud! With the help of speech recognition and facial recognition systems, a computer gathers information from the users and starts interacting with them according to their mood variations”. Human cognition depends primarily on the ability to perceive, interpret, and integrate audio-visuals and censoring information. Thus, this technology can even understand your emotions by the simple touch on the mouse. Kumar, R (2010) in his research stated “BLUE EYES system mainly consists of Mobile measuring Device called Data Acquisition unit (DAU) and a central analytical system called central system unit (CSU)”

Bluetooth technology provides means for creating a Personal Area Network linking the operators and the central system.
The mobile device is integrated with Bluetooth module providing wireless interface between sensors worn by the operator and the central unit. ID cards assigned to each of the operators and adequate user profiles on the central unit side provide necessary data personalization so different people can use a single mobile device.
